Metal Detecting Holidays in Suffolk

Treasure hunters, we offer specialist metal detecting tours in the Suffolk countryside, with access to many acres of private farmland. In the heart of Suffolk close to the ancient burial ground of Sutton Hoo.

As featured in The Mail on Sunday and The Telegraph

Suffolk has a rich heritage across the centuries with many exciting finds from the Bronze Age, Celtic, Roman, Saxon and medieval periods. The renowned Anglo Saxon burial chamber at Sutton Hoo is close by and at nearby Rendlesham recent excavations have revealed a royal settlement and hall of the first East Anglian kings 1,400 years ago, possibly King Raedwald’s own great hall.

In February 2022, a 10 year old keen local detectorist unearthed the Butley seal whilst on a search. The seal's Latin inscription possibly translates to "Seal of the Priory and Convent of Butley, of Adam, Canon Regular". Adam served as Prior in the 13th century at The Priory. More recent history saw the 2021 Netflix film The Dig filmed a mile away at Butley Creek starring Carey Mulligan & Ralph Fiennes, the story of the archaeological dig at Sutton Hoo. The BAFTA award winning BBC's Detectorists is also filmed nearby, with Mackenzie Crook and Toby Jones.

We host small groups of up to 14 guests, led by experienced local metal detectorists with extensive knowledge of the area. Our guests will stay in both our beautiful Georgian farmhouse with a large south facing garden and Paddy’s cottage next door. Situated in peaceful countryside and surrounded by ancient woodland, the farmhouse has 12 double bedrooms, a drawing room, morning room, library and large dining room for the group to gather for dinner served by our private chef. We are close to the pretty towns of Woodbridge & Orford with many independent shops and restaurants.

Guests will return to the farmhouse after a day metal detecting for talks by local historians & archaeologists before having dinner prepared by our private chef.

Weather dependant, the Butley Creek ferry will be available to transport guests across the creek where they can detect uninterrupted but for lunch in the gardens of Gedgrave Hall. We will be giving guests the opportunity to visit Orford Castle and Museum during their stay, plus don’t forget Sutton Hoo is on our door step!

Butley Foot Ferry

Subject to weather and farmland availability there is the possibility to offer detectorists the chance to hop on the Butley foot ferry across to farmland over the water at Gedgrave. Follow in the footsteps of the monks who ferried across to Orford in the 14th Century.

Bronze Age axe-heads, 3500 years old - Julian Evan-Hart

 Our very own find…

Found in the local area in February 2022 by a young detectorist, the Butley seal’s inscription possibly translates to "Seal of the Priory and Convent of Butley, of Adam, Canon Regular". Adam served as Prior in the 13th century at The Priory. The Greenwell family, who own Butley Priory, are now the proud owners of the seal after a successful bid at auction. The proceeds were equally divided between Suffolk Air Ambulance and the young detectorist.
